Dr. Soma Ghosh

Dr. Soma Ghosh is the daughter of freedom fighter, Shri Manmohan Chakravarty and adopted daughter of Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan, with whom she has had the opportunity to perform five Jugalbandis / duet concerts- of which two were held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, and the Parliament of India, where she was facilitated by the President of India, Hon.Dr.A.P.J.A.Kalam, Smt. Sonia Gandhi & Shri Jaswant Singh and the 543 MPs of India. Under her NGO, Madhu Murchhana, she later performed at the Rashtrapati Bhawan again, at the behest of the then President of India, Hon. Smt Pratibha Patil. She is the first woman to ever perform in Bal Yogi Auditorium, in the Parliament of India.

A literature graduate from Banaras Hindu University, Soma Ghosh mastered in Music and completed her Doctorate in Khayal from Music College, Banaras Hindu University. After her D. Mus she specialized in the genres that typify Banaras Gharana singing, namely Thumri, Tappa, Hori, Chaiti, Kajari, Dadra and Ghazal under Smt. Bageshwari Devi. Post this, she received training in the Kirana Gharana at ITC SRA under the guidance of Shri A T Kanan.

She is the founder trustee of NGO and Trust Madhu Murchhana (registered in 1999) which dedicatedly works to support ailing musicians from humble backgrounds who need help to pursue their dreams through the Musician’s Welfare Fund established by the Trust. The NGO also focuses on saving the Endangered Musical Instruments & Gharanas by giving them a platform and encouraging people to play the dying instruments. Dr. Soma Ghosh also organises a series of ‘Parampara’ concerts to help promote our Indian classical musical culture in a way which is more appealing to the younger generation and the modern-day audience. The first ‘Parampara’- Exhibition, Seminar & Music Festival in 2005 was inaugurated by President of India Hon. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and attended by Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh, Hon. Shri S.M. Krishna, Governor of Maharashtra, and Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashta Shri R.R. Patil.

Organised by Madhu Murchhana, she later performed at the Rashtrapati Bhawan again, at the behest of the President of India, Hon. Smt Pratibha Patil.

She is the first person in the country to initiate a revival of the traditional court mehfil style. She has organised ten ‘Darbari Mehfil’ concerts for the revival of ancient court mehfils at which Late Bharat Ratna Bismillah Khan Sahab, Late Bharat Ratna Shri Bhimsen Joshi ji and Late Padma Vibhushan Pt. Birju Maharaj ji had performed.

She has been conferred up on the titles of ‘Kashi Kokila’ by Ustad Bismillah Khan at the Swarangana Sangeet Sammelan in 2002, ‘Gandharva Kokila’ by the Rotary Club of Bombay Sea Coast in 2006 and Regd.Office : 2 Pushpa colony, Manchubhai Road, Malad (East), Mumbai – 400097 Tele Fax : (022) – 28891596, Mob. 09324529743, E-mail : somaghosh62 @yahoo.co.in Trust Regd. She also received the ‘Best Ghazal Singer’ Award by Big Star IMA, 2011 for her album ‘Ishq’.

She performed at four concerts in Fiji in 2013 organised by the Indian High Commission and Fiji National University where she presented Indian classical music in fusion with traditional Fijian tribal dancers and folk music. Following this she was invited as an Adjunct Professor to Fiji National University. In 2014, she organised ‘Fusion Harmony’, a concert through which she combined Fijian and Indian Classical music in Suva, Fiji which was attended by Parliamentarians and High Commissioners. She continued this concept in Linköping, Sweden and London, United Kingdom in 2015. Further, she performed at Muscat, Salalah, Sohar and Sur in Oman for the Festival of India Series organized by ICCR, Government of India.

She was conferred upon with the Padma Shri Award by the Govt. of India on 26th January, 2016 and subsequently made a member of the National Implementation Committee for the centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan Sahab, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, 2016-17.

She is the ‘Brand Ambassador’ for Banarasi Silk Sarees by the Ministry of Textiles and represents the National Bunkar Action Committee which consists of 70,000 weavers. She was joined in her efforts by Padma Vibhushan Pt Chhannulal Mishra, Padma Bhushan Pt Vishwamohan Bhatt, Padma Shri Anup Jalota, Shri Shaan, Smt. Rekha Bhardwaj, Shri Javed Ali, Pt. Ronu Majumdar and Smt. Madhushree among others. This initiative was supported by celebrated actor Padma Shri Priyanka Chopra. A song saluting the Corona Warriors was aired on DD National for a full week.

She has written a book titled ‘Baba & Me: Ustad Bismillah Khan Through My Eyes’, which was released by our Hon Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji and published through Prabhat Prakashan.

Under Madhu Murchhana, her two decades old NGO, she has conducted, organised, and performed at eight Ministry of Culture’s ‘Bharatiya Lok Sangeet’ Concerts (2019-2020) under the National Presence Scheme at Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Hooghly (West Bengal), Guwahati (Assam), Mumbai (Maharashtra), Bengaluru (Karnataka), Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Syaldey Almora (Uttarakhand) and New Delhi. Through this series, she has interacted with over 20,000 students, aiding her efforts to promote Indian music and culture.

She was invited to New Jersey, USA and honoured at - ‘Mera India, New India’ concert for Friends of Gujarat, 2019 and at the Legacy International Business Summit & Awards at Singapore, 2019.

She is a member of the Academic Council of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, 2016-22 and was a Jury member of the ‘Kalidas Samman’, Government of Madhya Pradesh, in 2017 & 2022.

Dr. Soma Ghosh has released 24 albums till date. One of these – ‘Whispers of Jasmine’ was a request by President of India Hon. Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam to have his poem by the same name sung by Dr. Ghosh. Her albums, ‘Ishq’ and ‘Uski Dulhan Sajaungi’ were released by Hon. Smt. Sonia Gandhi and she won the Big Star IMA Award - Best Ghazal singer for her album ‘Ishq’.   • November, 2009: ‘Shaheed Shraddhanjali’ concert organized by Madhu Murchhana remembering the Martyrs of 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack, at Bhaidas Hall, Mumbai, Maharashtra. This included a showcase of a documentary film made by National Award winning Director Shri Subhankar Ghosh on the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack, produced by Madhu Murchhana for the occasion, this film was later screened by the Mumbai Police Department for 3 consecutive years thereafter in remembrance.

  • August, 2003: A historical ‘Jugalbandi’ concert organized by Madhu Murchhana with duet performance by Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan Sahab and Dr. Soma Ghosh at Balayogi Auditorium, Parliament of India, New Delhi.
  • December, 2002: Dr. Soma Ghosh was awarded the title of ‘Kashi Kokila’ by Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan Sahab who himself was conferred the title ‘Shaan-E-Banaras’ at Swarangana Sangeet Sammelan, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
